The Independence Day speech

Assalamu’alaikum Wr. Wb.
First of all, let us praise to the Almighty Allah SWT, because of His Blessing we
are able to attend this English speech contest. Secondly, may peace be upon the
prophet Muhammad Saw who has guided us from the darkness into the
brightness.
I also would like to say many thanks to the juries and MC who have given me
opportunity to deliver an English speech entitled: The Independence of the
people of Indonesia.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I start my speech by reading the proclamation text of the Indonesian
independence.
PROCLAMATION
We, the people of Indonesia, hereby declare the independence of Indonesia.
Matters which concern the transfer of power and other things
will be executed by careful means and in the shortest possible time.
Djakarta, 17 august 1945
In the name of the people of Indonesia
Soekarno—hatta
Ladies and Gentlemen,
As we all know, for more than 300 years, our country had lived under the
colonialism and imperialism by other countries, starting from Portuguese,
English, Netherlands, and Japanese. During the colonialism, our people lived in
suffer and poverty. There were no dignity and freedom as the existence of
human being
2
The history of our people in struggling against the colonialism was based on the
dignity as the human being. At first, the fighting was done by the local
kingdoms from all over Indonesian territories. It was carried out separately and
therefore the colonialists were able to stop it.
At the beginning of 19th century, there was a new perspective on the way of
how to struggle against the colonialism. The new perspective was that
Indonesian people should unite and not struggle separately. The Indonesian
people should be together to reach the freedom. The efforts were not only by
weapon but also diplomacy. It could be said that everything we did; it was for
the sake of independence… free from the colonialism.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The culmination of all struggles done by the Indonesian people happened on
Friday, 17th August, 1945. On the behalf of all the people of Indonesia, Soekarno
– Hatta proclaimed the independence of Indonesia. The proclamation indicated
that a new nation was born. It was the reflection of the unity of Indonesian
people after for many years sacrificing with tears and blood…
Brothers and sisters,
Today, we live in an independent country. We live in a nation which is free from
colonialism and imperialism. We live in a beautiful country… Indonesia.
But, have we ever asked ourselves: Is Indonesia truly free from colonialism? Is
our country truly independent from imperialism?
Ladies and Gentlemen;
Brothers and Sisters,
It is a fact that our situation now is different with the past. We don’t bring the
weapon and yell out… freedom!! We don’t face the colonialists and shout
them… go to hell!! We are now in the situation of big global wave…
globalization. We live in a world that there is no limitation to interact among the
countries. There is no handicap to access any kinds of information.
This is, the new dimension of colonialism. It refers to the way in influencing and
furthermore destructing a country from the side of culture. A country without its
own culture will become a group of people without identity. Culture, is the
dignity of human being.
Look at around us!
3
There are many bad effects of globalization influencing the attitudes of our
society. Drugs, free-sex, and also the misuse of technology are some examples of
the bad effects caused by the new colonialism. The globalization itself is actually
the consequence of the global development. It cannot be stopped, but its bad
effects can be reduced in order to make our country survive.
Brothers and Sisters,
That is our challenging now. That is our struggle to defense the existence of our
nation. Our struggle is to fulfill this independence with working and creating a
better life for our society. Our struggle is to fight against corruption, collusion
and nepotism. And the last, our struggle is to keep our culture survive in the era
of globalization.
Finally I would like to remind all of us. Our founding fathers had fought and
struggled to reach the independence of this country. It is now our duty to take
care of it. So, let us keep this country survive. Long live Indonesia… Long live
Indonesia!
That’s all my speech
Thank you very much for your attention.
Wassalamu’alaikum Wr.Wb.
